Why 100KB Limits Exist
Passport, visa, and government ID systems often set strict file size caps — commonly 50KB to 200KB — to keep their upload servers fast and storage costs low. A modern phone photo is usually 2-5MB, so it needs to be compressed by 95% or more to fit.
Resize First, Then Compress
The biggest win comes from reducing the pixel dimensions, not just the quality setting. Most ID photo specs only require 600x600px or smaller. Set the max width/height option before compressing — shrinking an oversized photo down to the required dimensions does more to hit a small file size than lowering quality alone, and keeps the photo looking sharp.
Fine-Tune the Quality Slider
After resizing, bring the quality slider down gradually — try 70%, check the resulting file size, and adjust from there. JPG is the safest format for ID photo uploads since almost every government portal expects it. If you're still over the limit, resize slightly smaller rather than dropping quality too far, since a slightly smaller photo looks better than a heavily compressed one at full size.
